KAPIT: Lating Minggang is the new walikota of Kapit District Council taking over from Datuk Philimon Nuing who had served for the past 16 years.

The handing over of duty was held at the District Council’s conference room here yesterday.

The ceremony was witnessed by council secretary Jabang Juntan, assistant secretary Kelimbik Sibat, senior officers of the council and local councillors.

Prior to his appointment as walikota, Lating (60), from Rumah Undi, Sungai Sut was an officer with Petronas for 24 years.

Earlier, Kelimbik briefed the councillors on their allowance, entitlements and council facilities.

Kapit District Council has 32 councillors including the walikota. Eleven of them are new faces. They are Lating, Watson Awan Jalai (new deputy walikota), Ballin Jampong, Aman Yakow, Janong Begelin, Kena Gendang, Labang Jaon, Louis Nyagong Lenjau, Ma Thian Kock, Martin Bilun and Neo Kek Seng.

The 21 incumbent councillors are Zully Ambrose Blikau, Yu Si Geok, Wong Hau Ching, Ugu Matu, Tirah Lawai @ Liwan, Rose Demon Simpang, Munah Luyoh, Mohd Abdul Halim Abdullah, Ilahi Junaidi, Michael Nyantaw, Liew Hui Hua, Joseph Jarrau, Jadam Iba, George Tang, Francis Bakat, Ellison Silo Bilun, Eda Ibon, Daniel Levoh Imang, Bete Lahang, Bakat Gira and Abu Talip Mohammad Mokhtar.

The swearing-in for all the councillors from the various local authorities throughout the state was held at Pullman Hotel, Kuching on July 31 in the presence of Chief Minister Datuk Patinggi Abang Johari Tun Openg.
