SIBU: The line-up of community leaders appointed in Nangka constituency is in line with Gabungan Parti Sarawak’s (GPS) consensus, said Councillor Teo Nging Poh.
Teo, who is also the Nangka Progressive Democratic Party (PDP) chairman, criticised the Nangka Sarawak United People’s Party (SUPP) chairman Chua Beng Seng for his public dissatisfaction with the list of community leaders appointed.
Teo accused Chua of fanning the flames on social media and creating anger and blame between GPS component partners.
He suggested that Chua’s perceived authority based on his titles in the area may be threatened and urged him to take notes from PDP president Datuk Seri Tiong King Sing, who has brought positive changes to Sibu.
“Perhaps he feels his perceived authority based on his titles in the area is being threatened. But this manner of airing his grievances will not retain the people’s support.
“On the contrary, many Sibu people have openly expressed their gratitude to Tiong for bringing positive changes to Sibu.
“Maybe Chua should take notes instead of continuing to be complacent within his authority,” he said in a statement.
Teo pointed out that the current line-up of community leaders in Nangka includes two penghulu and six kapitans appointed by the SUPP, while there are two penghulu and three kapitans appointed by the PDP.
He stressed that the fact remains that these appointments were reached through negotiations between GPS component parties.
As such, he thanked Deputy Minister of Education, Innovation, and Talent Development Datuk Dr Annuar Rapaee, who is also the Nangka assemblyman, for his open-minded and inclusive approach to managing the appointments.
“Therefore, if the SUPP chairman of Nangka has any issues with the list, he should raise the matter privately within his party.
“Do not drag PDP into your internal squabbles in SUPP; we have no interest in taking part in your party affairs,” Teo said.
He then reminded Chua that GPS is founded on the principle of power sharing among partners and accused him of showing his frustration or even jealousy with PDP’s surges of success.
He also criticised SUPP for monopolising positions in the past, including the Sibu Hospital Visitors Board.
Teo urged everyone to be temperate and avoid speaking out of turn on the matter further, saying that bickering unnecessarily over it makes a mockery of the original intention of serving the people.
He noted that the GPS leadership has stressed the importance of collaborative unity and mutual support among its component parties.
