BETONG: The standard of education in Layar has improved, thanks to the Layar Education Development Committee (LEDC) which is distributing learning materials to students in the constituency.

Assemblyman Datuk Gerald Rentap Jabu Layar revealed that Layar is the only constituency which has such a committee to assist the students in learning English. The committee has the blessings of the State Education Department.

“The committee not only provides learning aids but teachers are also given additional training by experts in early childhood education with emphasis on English proficiency.

“We are aware that the Ministry of Education (MOE) has provided various similar teaching and learning methods throughout the country, but to see an increase in students reading and speaking in English quickly is effective through the teaching methods of the Jolly Phonics Programme,” he said.

He was speaking at the awards ceremony for Jolly Phonics teachers at the Layar Service Centre, on Sunday (Jan 23).
