KUCHING: Eight Sarawakian students have been awarded scholarships by the Lee Foundation, a private charitable organisation based in Singapore.
These students are first-time recipients of the Lee Foundation’s scholarships.
Among them, three are enrolled at University Malaysia Sarawak (UNIMAS), two at UCSI University’s Kuching Campus, one at Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM), one at Swinburne University of Technology Sarawak Campus and one at Universiti Utara Malaysia.
Sarawak Democratic Action Party (DAP) chairman Chong Chieng Jen congratulated the recipients in a Facebook post and thanked the Lee Foundation for their generous support.
“These students come from low-income families. This scholarship from the Lee Foundation is like a lifeline for them, providing significant assistance for their education fees and living expenses,” he said.
Chong also clarified that the Lee Foundation’s scholarships are open to students of all surnames and do not come with any obligations or requirements to work for the foundation after graduation.
He added that to date, nearly 200 students from disadvantaged backgrounds in Sarawak have benefited from the Lee Foundation’s scholarships.
“Although the foundation only covers a portion of their tuition fees, it is a significant help and greatly reduces their families’ financial burden,” he added.
He also called upon those in need of financial assistance to approach him for assistance in applying.
“The criteria for applying are straightforward: applicants must demonstrate academic excellence and belong to middle to lower-income families.
“However, the scholarship is awarded annually, and applicants must maintain excellent academic performance in the previous year to continue receiving the scholarship,” he added.
