KUCHING: Social activist Tan Sri Lee Lam Thye has called on the younger generation to get actively involved in voluntarism.
And he is hoping his lifetime of service, chronicled in his book ‘Call Lee Lam Thye-Recalling a Lifetime of Services’ will inspire them to do likewise.
“If they want to learn what I have done they should follow the example I have set,” he said during his biography signing session at the Tun Jugah Mall here on Tuesday (Aug 2).
“My political career ended in 1990 but responsibility and commitment to the society and the country are still running,” he said.
Lee who is also the chairman of Alliance for Safe Community hopes his story will motivate the young generation.
The book recounts Lee’s experience while serving the public throughout 53 years of involvement in politics and social activities.
Aged 76, Lee once served as elected representative of Bukit Nenas and Serdang besides being the Member of Parliament for Bukit Bintang between 1978 and 1990.
He was active in the political arena with the Democratic Action Party (DAP) until his retirement in 1990.
“I served the people in two phases, that is through politics for 23 years where I became a member of the state legislature and a member of parliament.
“The second phase is when I made the decision to withdraw from the political arena and continue to serve the people and country as a leader in non-governmental organisations (NGO).”
Meanwhile, he said revenue from the book sales will be channeled to charity.
The 312-page book produced in English and Mandarin is sold in bookstores or online for between RM50 and RM70.
