KUCHING: The local community must involve themselves in looking after the welfare of orphans at the Laila Taib Welfare Complex (Peryatim) here.
Tourism, Arts, Culture, Youth, and Sports Minister Datuk Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah said apart from government support, Peryatim also required support from NGOs, corporate bodies as well as the public to ensure that the welfare of the orphans and the less fortunate were properly taken care of.
He made the call when representing Chief Minister Datuk Patinggi Abang Johari Tun Openg at an Aidilfitri thanksgiving dinner held at the Peryatim complex in Petra Jaya last Saturday.
Present was the Chief Minister’s wife Datuk Amar Juma’ani Tuanku Bujang and 122 orphans housed at the complex.
Meanwhile, Peryatim chairman Datuk Misnu Taha said Peryatim was targeting to raise RM1 million to fund social and educational programmes for the orphans at the welfare home. To date, it has raised half the amount.
Karim, who is Sadong Jaya assemblyman, noted that many alumni of the Peryatim complex have become successful in life as some were engineers, lawyers, and graduates in various disciplines.
He assured that the Sarawak government would always endeavour to help Peryatim to ensure that the welfare of the less fortunate children was taken care of.
