KUCHING: Datuk Seri Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah is hopeful that Sarawak will maintain their momentum at the 21st Malaysia Games (SUKMA) to win the overall championship title.

The Youth, Sports, and Entrepreneur Development Minister noted that Sarawak are currently leading the medals table with four gold, one silver, and three bronze medals.

“Our performance so far is good. We’ve just had started with events like wushu, cycling, and tenpin bowling that have reached the finals, and we have clinched some gold medals,” he said.

He was speaking at a press conference after officiating at the opening ceremony of the 21st SUKMA tennis event at the Sarawak Lawn Tennis Association (SLTA) courts here today.  

Abdul Karim also expressed his optimism that Sarawak will continue to collect more gold medals.

“There are more sports where I know we will be able to win even more gold medals.

“As I have been mentioning all this while, we want to be the overall champions. It’s been a very long wait for us.

“The last time we held the overall championship title was 30 years ago, in 1994. And this is the year, God willing, Sarawak will be the overall champions,” he said.

Meanwhile, wushu athlete Stephanie Ngu Chai Ern contributed to Sarawak’s latest gold medal today.

As of 11.40 am, Terengganu rank second in the tables standings followed by Penang in third place.
