SIBU: Li Hua Hotel and Medan Hotel here have ended their tenure as temporary quarantine centres.
Sibu Division Disaster Management Committee chairman Charles Siaw said Tuesday was the last day for both hotels as temporary quarantine centres for students returning home during the movement control order (MCO) and conditional movement control order (CMCO).
“We wish to express our appreciation to the Hock Peng Group, especially Datuk Toh Chiew Hock, managing director and Pemanca Datuk Toh Chiew Peng, deputy managing director, Mdm Toh Leh Bin, director of Li Hua Hotel and Medan Hotel chain, who have generously offered to let us use the two hotels with a total of 202 rooms as temporary quarantine centres free of charge from May 2 until June 16 for a total of 46 days,” he said, adding that three halal meals were provided free of charge to the students.
A total of 1,133 Sarawakian students-525 from Sibu Division and 608 from various divisions such as Sri Aman, Betong, Sarikei, Mukah and Kapit returning from West Malaysia and Labuan-had benefitted, he added.
“Our state government has saved about RM1.2mil from the generous gesture of the Hock Peng Group.
“We are very happy with the modern and well-maintained facilities at the two hotels,” Siaw said.
In compliance with standard operating procedure and safety precautions, he said during the temporary quarantine period, the hotel facilities, including reception, cleaning, sanitising and laundry services, were operated by well-trained and experienced staff from various agencies, including the Health Department, JPAM, police and Rela.
“We are happy to add that during the whole quarantine period, there was no positive case of Covid-19 detected among the students or support staff. We can assure you that the hotels are safe to welcome new guests,” Siaw stressed.
