KUCHING: The Spartan Community Workout will serve as an introduction to a taste of what’s to come at the inaugural Spartan Race Sarawak in October.
Kuching Fitness Association (KFA) president Carter Wei said, in collaboration with Spartan Race Malaysia and Sarawak Sports Council, they aim to promote and provide training to prepare for the world’s number one obstacles race brand that will set foot on Borneo on Oct 19 and 20.
“The first event will be held at Saradise Kuching on Sept 29 and the second at Stadium Perpaduan on Oct 6. Both events will be from 8.30am to 10am,” he said when met by reporters after a press conference at Saradise Innovation Space yesterday.
Carter disclosed that the organiser has received great response to the race which will be held at Semenggok Leadership Institute.
“So far 2,600 participants have signed up, 60 percent are participants outside of Sarawak,” he said, adding that the community-based event is open to anyone 12 years old or older at any fitness level as it also aims to promote a healthy lifestyle among fellow Sarawakians.
“The community workout is designed to allow Spartan racers to train with fellow Spartans, get fit and learn useful tips on how to conquer the race together with the Spartan community.
“The workout will be led by Spartan Certified SGX (Spartan Group Training) Trainers from CrossFit Kuching (the only gym to have Spartan Certified SGX trainers in Sarawak) to provide a safe and functional workout that is adaptable to any fitness level or physical limitation.
“The one and a half-hour workout are designed to test one skill and get Spartan racers ready for the actual event. The first community workout will feature 300 Burpees Challenge while the second will be a Spartan Stadium Challenge,” he said.
Pre registration is a must and both workouts will be capped at 300 people. Those interested are advised to email crossfitkuching@gmail.com for registration.
Saradise Sdn Bhd chief operating officer Dylan Yee said Saradise is happy to host the community event as it is in line with the company’s aspiration which focuses on the community’s needs.
Also present were Sarawak Sports Council director Dr Ong Kong Swee, representative from the Youth and Sports Ministry Zul Yusop, KFA vice president Gordon Chung and CrossFit Kuching official Allan Bungan Begri.
