Lights off: Time to switch off for Earth Hour

KUCHING: You can do your part for Earth Hour tomorrow. How?

Switching off your lights from 8.30 pm until 9.30 pm tomorrow (Mar 25), said Datuk Wee Hong Seng.

The Kuching South City Council (MBKS) mayor said that in support of the movement, the council will on its part will be turning off lights at its office, parks, and facilities.

“Earth hour is more than just an hour of turning off the lights. It is a movement for the benefit of the people and this place, with the aim of securing a brighter future for all.

“It also aims to increase awareness and spark global conversations on protecting nature, tackling the climate crisis, and working together to shape a brighter future for us all.

“Therefore, we would like to invite the public to join us in this movement and help amplify its mission and impact,” he told a press conference on the Earth Hour event at the council’s office today.

Wee said other councils, namely Padawan Municipal Council (PMC), Kota Samarahan Municipal Council (KSMC), Miri City Council (MCC), Sibu Municipal Council (SMC), and Sibu Rural District Council (SRDC) will be taking part as well.

“In addition, private sector such as hotels and shopping malls under MBKS’s jurisdiction will also be participating.

“We advise the public that some of the council’s facilities, parks and areas will be in darkness for one hour,” he said.

For locations and buildings include MBKS city hall, community hall, Taman Kuching, Song Kheng Hai Hawker Centre, Stutong Community Market and Friendship Park.

Besides that, Farley Shopping Mall, Ibraco office, Everrise shopping mall, Chagee at Friendship Park will also be turning their lights off for an hour tomorrow.

The participating hotels include Kuching Park Hotel, Imperial Hotel, and Kingwood Hotel.

Shopping malls such as Boulevard Shopping Mall, Vivacity Megamall and Green Height Mall are also playing their part.

Meanwhile, i-CATS University College will also be taking part in the Earth Hour movement which began in 2007 in Sydney, Australia.

Earth Hour is a global movement that unites supporters in over 190 countries and territories every year.

It takes place on the last Saturday of March at 8.30 pm, where people take action by switching off lights for an hour in honouring and raising awareness on Earth Hour.

The public can also view the Earth Hour event which will be live streamed on Wee’s Facebook page starting from 8 pm onwards.

Also present at the press conference were KSMC chairman Datuk Peter Minos and PMC deputy secretary Henry Jalin.
