SARAWAK’s northern-most constituency is geologically advantaged for enhanced trades and tourism among the local residents and people from Brunei and Sabah. Notable tourist attractions include Mendalam Shellfish in Ulu Sungai Nanga Medamit, Headhunter Trail to Mulu and Gunung Buda, Taman Tasik Mas, Lumpur Panas in Meritam and Bukit Kayu Hitam. The parliamentary constituency of Limbang (P. 221) is represented by Hasbi Habibollah (BNPBB).
It comprises the state seats of N79 Bukit Kota and N80 Batu Danau which are represented by Dr Abdul Rahman Ismail (BN-PBB) and Paulus Gumbang (BN-PBB) respectively. Like many other areas in Sarawak, Limbang is rapidly developing to be on par with much bigger towns and cities such as Kuching, Sibu, Miri, and Bintulu.
Limbang has its own unique characteristics. Sandwiched between Temburong and Brunei mainland, it is a melting pot of culture among the indigenous races of Sarawak, Brunei and Sabah. The Limbang Festival is an annual event that draws thousands of people, including those from Brunei and Sabah. Awang Tengah, who is also Second Minister of Urban Development and Natural Resources, said a holistic, comprehensive and inclusive study on developing Limbang will be conducted by the state government. “More emphasis will be placed on opening up more areas through the Highlands Development Authority under the Regional Corridor Development Authority (RECODA).
“This will, in turn, integrate and realise the potential of all the highland areas,” he said. Among recent developments in Limbang is the opening of the Friendship Bridge in Pendaruan. As part of the Pan Borneo Highway, the bridge costing RM21 million serves as a landmark of the close cooperation between Brunei and Malaysia.
There is also the Limbang Bridge project costing RM150 million which aims to reduce travelling distance greatly between Limbang and Bandar Seri Begawan in Brunei. The recent announcement of an RM150 million allocation to upgrade health facilities in the division includes the building a specialist hospital, a polyclinic, a rural clinic at Kpg Telahak and a mobile clinic in Medamit.
