MUKAH: The supply of fresh fish in the market here lately has been very limited due to unfavourable sea conditions.

Conditions were dangerous, especially to coastal fishermen using small boats commonly known as ‘bot tangsi’.

Besides the rough seas, it was also windy and raining intermittently, causing floods in low-lying areas.

New Sarawak Tribune on Wednesday (Feb 3) and the last few days discovered that fresh fish was very limited in the market, with the ones available mostly frozen.

The price of frozen fish such as tuna, tenggiri and others was reasonable, but not easily taken up.

A senior citizen, who preferred anonymity, said: “We may have to consume frozen fish for the next few days, unless sea conditions improve.”

“Hopefully, there will be a break soon so that our coastal fishermen can resume their activities,” the man in his 60s said, while shopping at the wet market.

It was also discovered that the number of ‘umai’ (sliced fresh fish) sellers at the wet market was fewer than usual, between two and three only.

During good season, there would be about 10 sellers offering either ‘umai campur’ (mixed) or ‘umai jeb’ (dipped into mixed ingredients).
