BINTULU: The lion dance is synonymous to the celebration of Chinese New Year.
According to Chinese belief the lion dance can bring luck and wealth as well as chase evil spirits away in the new year.
Speaking at a pre-Chinese New Year event – Bintulu Lion Dance Festival 1.0 held at Times Square Megamall here last night, Minister of Tourism, Arts and Culture Datuk Seri Tiong King Sing said the dance was not only performed during such celebrations, but also at other ceremonies to symbolise unity and harmony between people.
“More and more, I see the number, especially young people, who participate in the lion dance performance is increasing and not limited to just one race.
“This healthy development shows the spirit of harmony and unity among the community in this state and I hope this spirit will continue,” said Tiong who was represented by his Special Officer at the Bintulu Member of Parliament Service Centre , Steven Kong.
A total of seven lion dance teams representing Bintulu Tua Pek Kong Old Believers Association, Sarawak E-Xin Dragon and Lion Dance Association Bintulu, Bintulu Fo Shun Sports Association, Wee Wu Lion and Dragon Dance Sports Association, Zong Ho Bintulu Lion Dance Association, SM Lion Dance Group Kai Dee Bintulu and Chinwoo Bintulu Sports, Culture and Recreation Club took part in the event.
