KUCHING: Nearly hundreds of colourful lions, dragons, happy Buddhas, God of Wealth, including celestial guardians were parading and dancing through the streets of the city here on Saturday (Dec 17) evening.
The Dragon and Lion Dance Cultural Parade is the first being held in Kuching, and is co-organised by the Clan Ho Association (Loh Kong) Kuching and Gu Jin Long Shi Shanzhuang.
It is estimated that about 80 teams from various associations statewide participated in the parade which started at the Kuching South City Council (MBKS) Building at around 6pm.
The troupes then continue to parade around the city through major roads, including Jalan Padungan and passing the Waterfront Kuching until 9pm.
As the parade started, it drew the attention of bystanders including foreigners where they were seen taking photos and videos of the parade.
The parade also saw beautifully-decorated trucks and also with troupes beating the drums on top of the trucks, while lion and dragons were following from behind in tandem with the rhythm of the Chinese drums.
Among the highlights during the parade, was also the giant and adorable black and white bear – panda.
Uniquely, there were also several glowing and lighted lions with LED lights which got crowds enthralled.
Present to officiate at the parade was Deputy Minister of Tourism, Creative Industry and Arts Datuk Sebastian Ting. MBKS Mayor Datuk Wee Hong Seng was also among those attending the event.
On a short note, Ting said the ministry will continue to support such an event and he is also looking forward to it being organised next year.
Meanwhile, the event is supported by the Ministry of Tourism, Creative Industry, and Performing Arts.
