KUANTAN: The Fisheries Development Authority of Malaysia (LKIM) and the Department of Irrigation and Drainage (DID) have been urged to address the shallow water problem in Sungai Kuantan.

Kuantan Member of Parliament Fuziah Salleh said the problem was found to have dragged for over 13 years, making it difficult for fishermen to go out to fish.

“I understand that the last time the estuary was dredged was about 20 years ago. This is a very long period of time, and has caused the problem to recur.

“For the boats to enter and exit (the river mouth), the minimum depth required is 3.5m, and if it is less than this, it will cause the boat’s fan blades to get stuck, posing a problem to the fishermen,” she told reporters while surveying the river mouth in a trawler near the LKIM jetty here on Monday.

Also present were Pahang LKIM director Rashima Baharudin and Teruntum State Assemblyman Sim Chon Siang. – Bernama
