KUCHING: The Llamas Drama Team from SK Setiawangsa was crowned champion in the Petrosains Science competition (PSDC) 2023.
The grand finals of the competition took place at HGH Convention Centre, Sentul, Kuala Lumpur on Tuesday (July 4).
The competition was jointly organised by PETRONAS’ social impact arm, Petrosains, The Discovery Centre and Ministry of Education.
Director of the Ministry of Education’s Sports, Co-curricular and Arts Division Zainuren Mohd Nor said the event was an initiative of Uphold Bahasa Malaysia and to strengthen the English language (MBMMBI) policy aimed at producing proficient English language speakers through their involvement in co-academic activities.
“Quality education must comprise of balanced effort in the arts, sciences, good moral and spiritual values.
“We hope more pupils will continue to develop their interest in science and enrol in science related courses in tertiary education,” he said in a statement yesterday (July 5).
With the theme- ‘Producing Green, Consuming Clean’, the integrated science and drama competition was aimed at promoting and cultivating interest in STEM learning.
According to the statement, the competition was designed to emphasise the significance of expressing ideas in English, allowing participants to demonstrate their scientific expertise using dramatic elements like scriptwriting, directing, stage management and technical aspects.
The winning team brought home cash of RM1,500 alongside an all-expenses paid trip to compete in the International Science Drama Competition (ISDC) which will take place at the National Science Museum in Thailand from September 9 to 11 this year.
The winners for the Most Outstanding Performer – Male and Most Outstanding Performer – Female categories were also announced, with Hassan Ali Rayyan Hirman Falani (Drama Llamas) from SK Setiawangsa and Sarah Nafeesa Mohamad Azmi (The Onerz) from SK Taman Tun Dr Ismail 1 clinching the titles respectively.
