KUCHING: Local residents here have appealed to the municipal council to widen and carry out proper drainage maintenance, especially during the monsoon season now.

Residents of PPR Taman Dahlia Flat urged the Padawan Municipal Council (MPP) to expedite the cleaning process of the clogged drains at Jalan Batu 5, Matang.

A spokesperson for the residency said the drainage system that was not properly repaired and became a water catchment area was causing unhygienic foul smell.

“On Christmas Day, we initiated an ‘gotong-royong’ (communal works) session to clean the clogged drains next to our block by ourselves but our efforts are limited because we don’t have the right equipment to complete the clean-up operation successfully.

“Furthermore, we are also afraid of the presence of poisonous animals,” he said.

It was witnessed at press time that drains around this vicinity were clogged with debris, causing the trapped water not to flow smoothly and excavators were needed to expedite the cleaning operations.
