KUCHING: The Democratic Action Party (DAP) wants local authorities to conduct a comprehensive review of the existing drainage system under their respective jurisdiction to address flooding issues in view of current rainy season.

Michael Kong, the special assistant to Padungan assemblyman Chong Chieng Jen, said flooding along Jalan Penrissen — between 6th Mile and 7th Mile — underscores the urgent need to address the issue, stressing that a critical inspection of the drainage infrastructure is necessary.

He said the stretch in question relies on two culverts to facilitate the smooth flow of rain water across the road towards the 7th Mile Old Bazaar, and eventually into a river.

“However, a cause for concern arises upon closer examination of these culverts. They are currently obstructed by an accumulation of sand, soil and rubbish.

“This obstruction impedes the efficient flow of water, even on days devoid of rain. Astonishingly, these culverts are already half-filled with debris on a clear and sunny day.

“This accumulation poses a severe risk during the current rainy season,” he said in a statement posted on his Facebook.

Efficient drainage is crucial to prevent flooding, safeguarding the well-being of the community and ensuring the smooth flow of traffic, he added.

Kong appealed to the Padawan Municipal Council (MPP) and relevant authorities to take immediate action to clear and maintain the drains to avert potential flooding and mitigate the associated risks.

“Timely preventive measures are key to ensuring the safety and comfort of our community during adverse weather conditions,” he said.
