KUCHING: The Magistrate’s Court here today sentenced a local man to 12 months in prison for retaining the stolen personal belongings of a 40-year-old man.

Stephanie, 29, from Kapit, pleaded guilty before Magistrate Mason Jaro Lenya Barayan to the charge under Section 411 of the Penal Code.

He is charged with retaining the stolen wallet, four identification cards, two ATM cards, a driver’s license and a set of car keys belonging to the victim.

Stephanie allegedly kept the properties in a house at Jalan Capital Garden around 12.10pm on July 25.

Based on the facts of the case, the complainant left his multi-purpose vehicle (MPV) unlocked in front of a store. When he returned, he found that his sling bag, containing personal items, had been stolen from the passenger seat.

A police report was filed for further action, which led to Stephanie’s arrest on July 25 at Jalan Capital Garden.

Investigations found that the man had retained the stolen properties as reported missing by the complainant.

Insp Merylene Lindan Andrew Mang prosecuted the case, while Stephannie was unrepresented by counsel.
