BINTULU: Narcotics police arrested a local man for possessing 5.03g of suspected methamphetamine in an operation codenamed ‘Ops Tapis Khas’ yesterday (Mar 5).

Bintulu police chief Supt Nixon Joshua Ali said the 44-year-old was detained for alleged distribution and abuse of drugs in Pasar Lama area, here.

“The suspect is being investigated under Section 39A (1) of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952 following the seizure of seven straw tubes of suspected methamphetamine.

“If convicted, the suspect could face a maximum sentence of five years in prison, along with up to three lashes of the cane,” he said.

Investigations found that the seized drugs were intended for distribution in Pasar Lama area, which can cater to around 20 users.

The suspect will also be investigated under Section 15(1)(a) of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952 after testing positive for drug abuse.

Nixon urged those with information related to substance abuse activities, to channel them to the Bintulu police operations room at 086-318304.
