SIBU: Sarawak’s badminton team suffered a crushing 0-5 defeat at the hands of Selangor in their Group A match today (Aug 18).

The loss came a day after Sarawak secured a narrow 3-2 victory over Sabah.

Today’s (Aug 18) encounter saw Sarawak’s Megan Tan Zhi Yi succumbed to a 21-3, 21-6 defeat against Selangor’s Letshanaa Karupathevan, a world-ranked 59th women’s singles player.

Sarawak’s men’s singles hopes were also dashed as Chua Kim Sheng fell to Alwyn Chua Kai Xu, 21-9, 21-10.

The mixed doubles pair of Jeremy Juan Zhen Liang and Genevie Lim Tsin Yeen were unable to prevent Selangor’s dominance, losing 21-15, 21-9.

Sarawak’s women’s doubles pair, April Lee Tong and Nurin Izzah Qistina Norman, put up a stronger fight but eventually succumbed to Loh Zhi Wei and Siti Nurshuhaini Azman, 21-9, 21-18.

The final match of the day saw Sarawak’s men’s doubles pair of Isyraf Hafizin Ibrahim and Pui Wee Young push Selangor’s Lok Hong Quan and Muhammad Faiq Haziq Masawi to the limit in the first set, before falling 24-22, 11-21.

Despite the heavy defeat, Sarawak remains in contention for a quarter-final spot as Sabah has lost to both Sarawak and Selangor.

The teams advancing to the quarter-finals will be known later today (Aug 18).
