KOTA SAMARAHAN: Kota Samarahan Municipal Council (MPKS) has successfully secured a place in the Malaysian Book of Records (MBR) for featuring the most varieties of ‘ulam’ (traditional salad) in a single event.
The remarkable achievement, showcasing 108 varieties of ulam, was celebrated during the Kota Samarahan Food and Cultural Festival (SFCF) 2024 at Aiman Mall on Saturday (May 18).
Sarawak State Legislative Assembly (DUN) Deputy Speaker and Muara Tuang assemblyman Datuk Idris Buang officiated the event and also witnessed the handing over of the MBR’s certificate.
In his speech, Idris said the festival which began on May 10 – 19, showcased varieties of traditional foods from Samarahan, Asajaya, Sadong Jaya as well as other popular fusion foods, drinks, fruits, cakes, along with many other stalls and activities held.
“I understand that the festival is in its third edition. The 2022 SFCF successfully attracted 98,000 visitors and generated an estimated RM260,000 in sales in the previous years.
“This special ulam features various types of traditional salads made from leaves, fruits, and herbs.
“Many of us, especially the younger generation, are unaware of the different types of ‘ulaman’ available around us.
“Therefore, through this programme, we aim to introduce the younger generation to the diverse agricultural products of our land, particularly traditional salads,” he said.
He added that being certified and having secured a place in the MBR, it would elevate the image of MPKS.
“Thus, I fully support the idea of organising this festival annually to attract more visitors to Samarahan, both from within and outside the region,” he said.
Also present was MPKS chairman Datuk Peter Minos.
