KUCHING: A 67-year-old man was detained by police for lodging a false police report of being robbed by two men and losing RM2,000 and his identification documents.

Acting Kuching police chief Supt Merbin Lisa said the police report was made on yesterday at about 1.37 pm.

The man had claimed that he was robbed by two men with knives who stole his cash amounting to RM2,000 and identification documents at Jalan Pisang here at around 10.30 am on the same day.

“However, the investigating officer was suspicious of the report and found out that the subject made a false report of being robbed.

“They interviewed the subject, who admitted that the report was false because he was worried of being scolded by his wife,” stated Merbin.

He said the reason why the subject made the false report was because he has yet to pay a RM2,000 treatment cost at a treatment centre.

A police report has been made regarding the action of the man for making the false police report and the case is being investigated under Section 182 of the Penal Code.

According to the record from last year, 13 fake police reports related to victims or subjects who were robbed were received by Kuching district police as the robberies never took place.

Merbin also shared that within the period from Jan 1 until March 16 this year, three fake police reports were investigated under the same section of the Penal Code.

“Members of the public are reminded to not make any false police report which can give a negative perspective of the crime rates happening in Kuching.

“This action can lead to the subject who made the fake report to be sentenced in court,” Merbin advised.
