KUCHING: An 83-year-old man called Hope Place recently, asking for food assistance.
Kong Yau Phen, who lives alone at Batu Kawa not only has no income, but has no savings as well.
Hope Place in a press statement here Monday said Kong used to sell fruits with his wife here but she was left bedridden after a severe stroke end of last year.
Now, Kong’s wife, 77, is staying in a nursing home.
“According to uncle Kong, he has a married daughter, living outside of Kuching. He told us he has lost contact with his daughter and that she never come back to see him or his wife,” its spokesperson said.
But Kong’s younger brother often visits him and brings him for breakfast, sometimes bringing him some food supplies and pocket money.
“Grateful for his brother’s care and concern, uncle Kong tries to stretch whatever money he has for as long as possible. Most times, even to the extend of just eating instant noodles for weeks,” she added.
“Being a friendly but lonely person, uncle Kong told many stories to Hope Place, even saying his only companion nowadays are his three dogs.
“We are supplying uncle Kong with regular food supplies and other household necessities,” she added.
