BINTULU: A Civil Defence Community Squad programme which seeks to heighten rural preparedness for emergencies and disasters was launched at the Jackson Wan longhouse in Tubau.

It was selected as the first location for the Kampung Siaga 221: Disaster Resilient Community programme which was officiated by Deputy Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department for Sabah, Sarawak Affairs and Special Tasks, Datuk Wilson Ugak Kumbong.

He said the programme was aimed at increasing resilience and community preparedness against emergency incidents, humanitarian services, crises and disasters.

“The Kampung Siaga 221 programme started on Oct 12 last year,” he said, adding “so far, there have been three launches of the Kampung Siaga 221 programme across the country.”

Ugak added that among the selection criteria for Kampung Siaga 221 are areas that are far inland, difficult to contact, areas prone to disasters, disconnected during disasters, limited access to communication, listed in the Ministry of Rural Development’s (KPLB) programme as well as having limited logistics.
