SARIKEI: Residents of two longhouses in Pakan and Julau have been advised to be on alert following landslides that occurred behind their longhouses yesterday (Mar 11).

The first longhouse was Rumah Regina at Mile 13, Jalan Engkamop in Pakan, while the second longhouse was Rumah Karon at Gerugu Sengaih in Julau.

It was made clear that the landslides happened at both locations on Thursday (Mar 9).

Bintangor fire station chief Nicholas Belulin, when contacted, confirmed that they received the emergency calls around 8.50am and deployed a team to the scene.

“They were deployed to the first scene at Rumah Regina, some 83 kilometres from the station.

“On arrival, the team monitored and inspected the landslide, which occurred at the back of three rooms (bilik) and damaged the bathroom and toilets.

“Seven residents of the affected rooms were advised to be cautious as the landslide may occur again if the rain continues,” he said.

At the second location in Rumah Karon, the team found that a landslide occurred near the kitchen areas of two doors (pintu) and caused minor damages.

Seven residents of the affected doors were told to be careful, as the collapse may happen again due to an unstable soil structure.

Nicholas added that the team also installed fences and covered the affected areas with canvas to prevent residents from going near the scene.

The longhouse residents were also urged to contact the authorities in the event that a landslide occurs again.
