KUCHING: Muslims are looking forward to celebrating Hari Raya Aidilfitri with their families and friends.

Besides spending time with their family members and friends, they look forward to delicious traditional dishes and treats during the celebration.

New Sarawak Tribune managed to interview a few Muslims about their Hari Raya preparations and their hopes for the celebration this year.

Our Hari Raya celebration and preparation this year will be simple. This is because my maternal grandfather just passed away early this year.

We usually celebrate Hari Raya at our mother’s village in Kampung Lidah Tanah, Batu Kitang. So during this year’s Hari Raya, we will definitely feel the loss of our maternal grandfather.

My hope for Hari Raya this year is to   to gather with my family members who come from far and near at our late grandfather’s home.

We will prepare the ‘ketupat’(rice that has been wrapped in a woven palm leaf pouch and boiled)  and ‘rendang’ (meat — most commonly beef (rendang daging) — that has been slow cooked and braised in a coconut milk seasoned with a herb and spice mixture), meat cooked with soy sauce, chicken curry, and mixed vegetables on the eve of Hari Raya Aidilfitri.

The most important dishes during Hari Raya are ‘ketupat’ and ‘Kek Lapis’(layer cake).

In the morning of Hari Raya, we will go to the mosque to perform Solat Raya before returning home to welcome guests to our house.

We prepared early for Hari Raya this year. We cleaned our house so that there will be no last-minute chaos.

It will be a joyous Hari Raya for me as our family members will gather  at my grandmother’s home in Kampung Tanjung Belipat, Niah.

My hope for Hari Raya this year  is that it will be more meaningful and that all of us will be blessed.

Our preparations for Raya this year are simple as we decide to spend wisely.

We only prepare what is important such as the food and we clean the house.
