SIBU: Chiew Kian Peng, 63, was honoured as the top blood donor for Sibu district during the World Blood Donor Day 2024 celebration.
The event, themed “20 Years of Celebrating Giving: Thank You, Blood Donors,” was organised by the Malaysia Red Crescent Society (MRCS) Sibu Branch in collaboration with Sibu General Hospital at a hotel here today (June 9).
Chiew, a lorry driver, has donated a record 147 pints of blood to date.
He told New Sarawak Tribune that he began donating blood at the age of 21 at the former Sibu Lau King Howe Hospital.
“I usually donate at least four times and up to six times a year.
“I do it out of enthusiasm to help the community in need, in line with the slogan, ‘Give Blood, Save Life.’ Whenever there is a blood donation drive, I make sure to participate,” he said.
Chiew also encouraged others to become blood donors.
“As long as we can help, we should do our best to contribute blood, as there is no substitute for human blood in saving lives during emergencies.
“I will continue to donate blood as long as I am healthy and fit for it.”
At the event, 13 other donors who had given between 100 and 133 pints of blood were also recognised and presented with appreciation certificates.
Bukit Assek assemblyman Joseph Chieng Jin Ek and MRCS Sibu Branch chairman Penghulu Chua Hiong Kee were among those who handed out the certificates.
