SIBU: The State Ministry of Transport is looking into establishing a lorry terminal in major towns in the state.

Minister Datuk Seri Lee Kim Shin said this was necessary with the ever-growing road connections in the state.

“The lorry terminal, now we are coming up with a new proposal, a new concept where we will not only be having parking places.

“It will be a lorry terminal because we have to look into the logistics and inventory throughout the whole Sarawak,” he said during the site inspection of the Sibu Lorry Parking Site at Jalan Ding Lik Kwong near Igan Bridge yesterday (May 9).

Lee pointed out that the state needed proper lorry terminals to prevent all heavy vehicles from going into the city centre.

“So, we need to have a proper terminal with facilities where we have warehousing when the goods arrive, they can unload the goods in the warehouse and then the smaller three tonne lorry, can pick up the goods.

“If they want to send the goods outside, they also send them to the terminals,” he said.

Lee also proposed for facilities like accommodation and eateries to be provided at the lorry terminals.

Lee said his ministry is still looking into the concept as it will be for the whole state.

“My ministry is now studying this and how we are going to improve our transport and logistic system in Sarawak.
“As you know now, we have more and more road connections so we have to look at the whole transportation network throughout Sarawak including our long-distance buses,” he said.
