KUCHING: A group of hikers who lost their way while descending from Mount Santubong last Saturday (Aug 8) were rescued by personnel of Permai Rainforest Resort on Sunday (Aug 9).
According to Petra Jaya Fire and Rescue Station chief Azaharul Sahari, firemen were deployed to the scene after a distress call on the incident was received at 6.40pm.
The victims, comprising five women and two men, were believed to have strayed from their paths and got lost in the forest after a hiking activity on Mount Santubong.
“Upon arrival, the firefighters proceeded to search for the victims but to no avail.
“Shortly after, the team received information at 7.50pm from three personnel of Permai Rainforest Resort, who managed to locate the victims in Teluk Belian,” he said.
Azaharul said that the victims were then taken to Teluk Sari from Teluk Belian to be handed over to the firemen.
However, the firemen could not deploy their boat to Teluk Sari to rescue the victims and personnel due to low tide.
“They continued to keep in touch with the victims and officers throughout their journey from the forest to the beach.
“They managed to return safely to Camp Permai at 12.35am,” he said.
He pointed out that one of the victims, who was fatigued, was given early treatment by the emergency medical rescue services (EMRS) unit.
