BINTULU: A smart environment programme (Program Kelestarian Alam Sekitar 2019) organised by Serba Dinamik Holdings Berhad has helped to drive home a message of love for the environment to Kampung Jepak residents.

Since the programme was launched, the villagers have been processing their organic and food-based wastes into natural fertiliser. Organised in collaboration with Bintulu Development Authority (BDA), the four-day programme from Aug 25 to 28 introduced to the villagers the Bokashi composting system, a cost-effective and easy way to produce fertilisers naturally.

Minister in the Chief Minister’s Office (Integrity and Ombudsman) Datuk Talib Zulpilip in his opening speech at the event said, with the introduction of this method, villagers can now produce their own compost.

“Now they don’t have to buy fertilisers. Besides, this method can enhance the management and handling of organic and food-based wastes in this area.
“It also helps reduce the cost of waste disposal as well as extends the lifespan of dumping sites,” he explained.

Serba Dinamik Holdings Berhad chairman Abdul Kadier Sahib said the programme was a first step in raising awareness among the villagers about the importan ce of the environment to the community.

“All this time, we have only instilled in-house awareness among our staff.“As we recognise the importance of caring for the environment, so we extend it to the people of Kampung Jepak.

“In fact, caring for the environment requires the cooperation of all parties for a more effective impact,” he pointed out, hoping that such a programme could be promoted elsewhere.

For BDA general manager Rodziah Morshidi, the event could educate the local community on the importance of solid waste management.
“This is a long-term venture and it’s not an easy task — the Taiwan government has been doing this for 20 years.

“So, as a start, Serba Dinamik is trying to introduce a natural way of making fertiliser and for the next step maybe recycling or reuse can be done,” Rodziah explained.
During the event, 25 families from Kampung Jepak were selected to foster children consisting of Universiti Teknologi Petronas (UTP) students.
