KUCHING: The Kuching Low-Carbon Hub is projected to attract investments of up to RM200 billion, creating opportunities across Sarawak and beyond.

Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg expressed optimism that the Kuching Low-Carbon Hub will position Sarawak as a leader in the low-carbon energy economy by driving technological innovation, fostering industrial growth and championing the energy transition. It will be complemented by critical infrastructure such as a new deep-sea port.

This initiative, he stressed, is set to be a game changer for Sarawak, Malaysia and the wider region.

“The launch of the Kuching Low-Carbon Hub is a significant milestone, but it is just one piece of a much larger puzzle that will drive Sarawak’s transition to a low-carbon economy.

“The Kuching Low-Carbon Hub and other projects under the Sarawak Gas Roadmap represent Sarawak’s commitment to playing a central role in Malaysia’s development agenda, aligning Sarawak’s ambitions with national and regional goals for a sustainable future,” he said during the Sarawak Gas Roadmap Summit at the Sheraton Hotel today (Nov 25).

During the event, the state government officially launched the Sarawak Gas Roadmap and the Kuching Low-Carbon Hub, marking a significant milestone in Sarawak’s journey towards energy transition.

Abang Johari asserted that strategic initiatives such as the Sarawak Gas Roadmap and the Kuching Low-Carbon Hub are not only addressing the state’s immediate energy needs but also laying the foundation for long-term sustainable growth that will benefit neighbouring communities and Malaysia as a whole.

As such, he said that Sarawak is firmly on track to achieving its vision of a sustainable and energy-secure future.

“This initiative builds on the momentum of the Sarawak Gas Roadmap by expanding gas-fired power generation to ensure a low-carbon energy supply for Sarawak.

“It will establish new low-carbon industrial clusters to pave the way for sustainable industries and enhance regional connectivity, positioning Kuching as a gateway to Borneo.

“Additionally, it will develop world-class Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS) infrastructure, unlocking the potential of offshore gas development in Western Sarawak,” he said.
