MIRI: The signing of a memorandum of agreement (MoA) between Miri City Council (MCC) and Warisan Teamwork Sdn Bhd, the management of Lutong Myy Mall, on Monday (Nov 1) marks the start of work to convert the mall into a community library.

According to MCC Lutong Community Library Committee Taskforce chairman, deputy mayor Julaihi Mohamad, the project would see the relocation of the old library from its current place in Lutong to the 10,000-square-foot mall.

The old library building in Lutong Bazaar is over 40 years old  and quite a distance from the city centre.

“With this relocation, we will be able to accommodate about 50,000 books, five times more than what we have at the old library.”

The relocation would be carried out in two phases.

Phase One would start within this year involving an allocation of RM500,000.

Meanwhile, Mayor Adam Yii disclosed that the new community library would attract more people to come to Lutong Myy Mall apart from rebooting the city’s tourism industry.

“The library is entirely a new set-up which follows closely the Miri Smart City concept with emphasis on the public to get involved in digital technology.”

Yii described the relocation as timely with Shell (Malaysia) and Petronas Carigali moving their upstream activities to Miri.

“With this development , we hope Miri and Lutong’s socioeconomy will be better in the near future.”

Also present were Warisan Teamworks Sdn Bhd managing director Kong Hee Tiing, MCC secretary Morshidi Frederick and MCC legal counsel Cindy Ann Robert.
