KUCHING: The Sarawak Customs Department has seized 10 luxury vehicles, valued at RM8.13 million, suspected of being stored illegally in the state.

The department’s director, Norizan Yahya, said the vehicles were seized on Sept 2 after a raid on an undisclosed location.

“Inspections revealed that the vehicles were imported without proper customs clearance and stored in an unlicensed warehouse,” he said.

The vehicles, worth approximately RM3.15 million, are subject to an estimated RM4.98 million in unpaid duties and taxes.

The case is being investigated under the Customs Act 1967, which carries a maximum penalty of RM500,000 or five years in prison, or both.

In addition to the vehicle seizure, the department has intensified its crackdown on cigarette and liquor smuggling.

Between July and August, authorities intercepted 2.4 million sticks of illicit cigarettes and seized smuggled liquors and beers worth a combined RM3.03 million.

The public is urged to report any suspicious smuggling activities to the Customs department at 1-800-88-8855.
