KUCHING: The state-level Maal Hijrah Festival, set to take place from July 12, promises a variety of activities for everyone, including non-Muslim visitors.
The three-day event will feature ‘Malam Cinta Rasul,’ ‘Taksim Salam’ programme, e-sports competitions, nasyid (Islamic song) contests, archery competitions, and more.
Sarawak State Mosque Welfare Trust Board (LAKMNS) chief executive officer Datuk Abang Abdul Wahap Abang Julai said that the activities planned are expected to attract people from all walks of life, especially the youth, to enliven the atmosphere around the mosque.
“The mosque is not just a place for worship, but also serves as a centre for education and various other activities.
“Therefore, we are organising a range of activities to make the mosque a vibrant place.
“For the e-sports competition, we have participation from non-Muslim youth,” he said in an interview with the New Sarawak Tribune.
Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg will officiate at the closing ceremony of the annual festival, held at the grounds of Masjid Jamek, on July 14.
Abang Wahap said that the festival is expected to attract up to 3,000 visitors at a time.
Additionally, he noted that the festival will feature a Rahmah sale, offering basic food items at affordable prices to visitors.
Various government agencies and local universities will also hold exhibitions, and the Sarawak Health Department will conduct health screenings during the festival.
“In my opinion, it would be a missed opportunity for anyone not to attend this festival, where there are numerous activities to participate in and food sales.
“This is the atmosphere we can expect to see during the Festival Maal Hijrah,” he added.
