SIBU: A retiree lost more than RM250,000 to a Macau scam recently, according to police here.
Sibu OCPD ACP Zulkipli Suhaili said the victim received a phone call from someone claiming to be a post office officer and a police officer from Sabah.
“Following the call, she made a total of 16 transactions amounting to RM264,950 to four bank accounts via Internet banking and cash deposits from May 29 to June 11.
“During that period, the victim was instructed not to tell anyone about the matter to avoid being arrested.
“The suspect also told the victim that her money would be refunded once it was reviewed by the police and National Audit Department.”
After making the payments, the victim kept contacting the suspect on the status of the matter but was told to wait for it to be completed.
Feeling suspicious that it was taking such a long time, the victim lodged a police report on Monday (July 4).
