SIBU: PKR Kanowit division has identified its candidates for the Machan and Ngemah seats for the next state election due in May 2021.
Its vice-chairman, Thomas Laja, speaking to reporters during a Gawai Dayak celebration here on Wednesday night said they would only reveal their names in good time.
“We have our candidates ready for the two seats. However, at this juncture I don’t want to expose them,” he said.
Ngemah and Machan are currently held by Alexander Vincent and Allan Siden Gramong of GPS, respectively.
Thomas said PKR Kanowit was in high spirit with Pakatan Harapan as the government at the federal level.
“We believe we can have enough funding for our election machinery from the PH government when the election comes,” he added.
He said the mood on the ground was also “good” because a number of BN supporters in the last parliamentary election had joined them.
Sarawak PKR chairman Baru Bian in his speech urged the Dayak to work together to develop their community.
“We need to work together to upgrade our economy to the highest level possible so that we can compete with other races,” he said in a text of speech read by his personal assistant, Simon Joseph.
The highlight of the evening was the Kumang Gawai contest which was won by a 23-year-old nurse Racquel Sheryl Echa Michael Remy. She received RM300, a hamper and a trophy.
First runner-up was 25-year-old polytechnic student Sharon Mathew while second runner-up was 23-year-old self-employed Siti Dabong.
