KUCHING: The Malaysian Association of Hotels (MAH) Sarawak Chapter had appointed its new office bearers for 2019 to 2022.

The appointment was held during the association’s Annual General Meeting (AGM) on March 18.

Mohd Ibrahim Nordin still retained the chairman’s post while its vice chairman one and two are John Teo and Solo Cleophas respectively.

Its honorary secretary-generals are Mason Tang and Patrick Lau.

Three committee members have also been selected; they are Audrey Wan Ullok, Ynonne Saman, and Awang Kedri Awang Bujang while Julie Tay was appointed as the association’s internal auditor.

In his speech, Ibrahim said currently the association has 85 members.

“We believe we are able to hit a target of having 100 members by end of 2022,” he said.

The number of registered members was 89 but had dropped to 85 members due to hotel’s cease of operation, change of ownership or management.

“Our objective this year, as Sarawak Ministry of Tourism, Arts, Culture, Youth and Sports Sarawak (MTACYS) intends to achieve a target of five million visitors to Sarawak in conjunction with Visit Sarawak Campaign (VSC); our association will do our best to actively participate and involved in promoting VSC,” he pointed out.

Meanwhile, other matters discussed during the AGM were on the trainings conducted by the association.

Last year, MAH Sarawak Chapter had organised two trainings for the hotel staffers to be Certified Hotel Administrator and Changing Mind Set for Excellent Service.

Recently, 295 hotel staffers attended SBL, SLB and Professional Certificate Training under the Human Resource Development Fund (HRDF).

“It is very alarming for the industry as we are not taking advantage of the huge existing fund allocated for training to improve and upgrade the overall industry standard,” Ibrahim said.

He added as for the association’s corporate social responsibility (CSR) last year, a blood donation drive was organised while other charity programmes were also conducted for the benefits of charitable organisation such as Salvation Army.

The AGM also attracted members not only from Kuching, but  others coming Miri, Bintulu, Sibu, and Sri Aman.

MAH, the umbrella body of hotels in Malaysia aims at uniting and promoting Malaysian hotels through building highly skilled, innovative and disciplined hoteliers, besides representing its members’ interest with state and federal governments as well as Sarawak Tourism Board and also related public sector industries.
