KUCHING: The Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) is yet to receive asset declarations from the two sons of former Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad.

MACC Chief Commissioner Tan Sri Azam Baki, said that notices were sent to Mirzan Mahathir and Tan Sri Mohkzani Mahathir last month under Section 36 of the MACC Act 2009.

“If they do not declare their assets within the designated time frame, they could potentially be prosecuted for failing to disclose assets,” he said during a press conference held at Pullman Hotel here Tuesday (Feb 6).

Azam Baki stressed that asset declaration constitutes merely one facet of the investigation, with numerous other aspects undergoing scrutiny.

“This indicates that prosecution is still pending as we must first complete the investigation,” he explained.

On Jan 18, MACC directed Mirzan to declare all assets, movable and immovable, held within and outside the country, within a 30-day period. Mohkzani was handed a similar notice on Jan 26.

In a separate development, MACC is still actively gathering evidence, both domestically and from overseas, as part of its investigation into former finance minister Tun Daim Zainuddin.

Azam Baki said the investigations stem from allegations regarding Daim’s sources of wealth and encompass a significant timeframe, involving numerous countries and witnesses.

He added that the agency has charged him and his wife for non-compliance under Section 36 (S36) of the MACC Act 2009, as part of the investigation.

“The declaration of assets is part of our process; besides that, investigations into his assets are still ongoing, and related issues are being pursued. Therefore, it will take time.

“This case has been ongoing for a considerable period, and we will make every effort to gather all the evidence.

“We face challenges in obtaining documentation, witnesses, and other aspects, so we must give our best effort; we never back down,” he stressed.
