BINTULU: Samalaju State Assemblyman, Majang Renggi welcomes the revival of the renowned Sarawak International Similajau Nature Challenge (SISNC) which was last held in 2015.
He said the event had the potential of encouraging younger people to be more active in sports and promoting the rich flora and fauna at Similajau National Park (SNP) situated some 30kms from Bintulu.
Majang made the comments after attending the press conference at the Bintulu Resident’s Office chaired by Bintulu Resident, Jack Aman Luat here on Tuesday.
“The SISNC, which was rebranded as Similajau Nature Challenge (SNC) 2018 or Pesta Similajau, is considered one of the toughest sporting adventure events in the state.
“Through the event, the park could become a new tourism attraction for Bintulu,” he said.
Majang added the event also provided an avenue for local participants to compete with the more experienced participants, including world-class sportsmen and sportswomen.
The event, which is open to all, covers a distance of 35kms. It consists of a 19.5km Beach & Trail Run for the Team Category and a 7.5km Run for Men and Women Single (Senior) and Men and Women Single (Junior) at the Similajau National Park. This year’s event will exclude the cycling event.
“The event was launched by then Minister of Tourism, Tan Sri Datuk Amar Dr James Jemut Masing in 2000. We will be holding it on November 3 with some side activities and events like tug of war, wall climbing, mass aerobics, food stalls and exhibition booths. Atractive cash prizes of RM13,100 are up for grabs,” said Majang.
The assemblyman added SNP had the potential to be fully utilized as a base for nature, sports and outdoor activities.
“As such, we propose to the government to let the private sector take over the management of the National Park so that facilities at the park can be further improved to attract more visitors,” he said.
Similajau National Park was gazetted as a National Park in 1976 and has one of the most beautiful coastal areas in Malaysia with miles of unspoiled
white and golden sand, and rocky beach facing the South China Sea. It is rich in flora and fauna and suitable for camping and outdoor activities.
