KUCHING: DAP politicians have been urged to get Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad to make Petronas transparent and accountable. “DAP politicians are always calling for transparenc y and accountability, so we want to start first with Petronas,” said Sarawak Reform Party (STAR) president Lina Soo.

She wanted Petronas to publish its accounts, to reveal how much it has been getting from Sarawak’s oil and gas.

She said the reported figures according to Petronas’ report are that production is as much as 800,000 barrels oil equivalent (BOE). “So why are we suffering? Why do we have to beg the federal government for funds and they give us only a miserable RM1 or RM2 billion?” she asked during at press conference at Telang Usan Hotel here yesterday. “As I am talking now, every second, every minute, they are drilling as much as they can. So every second that is lost is economic loss to Sarawak. This cannot continue.”

She urged the PH government to prove that now is a new Malaysia and that it must not keep on taking Sarawak’s oil and gas and giving nothing much back. “If PH wants to talk about transparency and accountability, please make Petronas accountable . Petronas must publish its account,” she repeated.

She said only the Prime Minister knows how much Petronas actually makes and Parliament Also cannot question him.

“ The PH government must live up to their word. This is our call. If you cannot make Petronas accountable and transparent, don’t talk about anything else,” Soo said. Soo said Sarawak’s oil and gas production is so much that it can make us an advanced and prosperous nation. Singapore is one of the G20 countries. “What does Singapore have?” she asked.
