KUCHING: The Biperoh community in Penrissen area has been urged to be proactive and work closely with the government to make the area economically vibrant.
Community leader penghulu Richard Deho also said the village headmen (ketua kampung) should work closely with their state assemblyman for the constituency (Datuk Dr Jerip Susil) and government departments and agencies to bring more infrastructure development and also to open up more economic activities which could improve the income of the village folks.
Richard said the villages along Sungai Sarawak Kiri could be developed into a Geo Park, adding that with its beautiful rivers, cave, waterfall, mountains and its flora and fauna, it is very suitable for eco-tourism activities and homestays.
He cited as an example the Langkawi Geo Park, where the local fishermen would tend to their tourism products when they could not go out to catch fish during the monsoon season.
“We have so many natural products to offer to tourists. We need to develop our tourism infrastructure and products in our area (Biperoh) because when the prices of commodities are down we can have extra income from our tourism products.”
He noted that the Department of Geo Science and Minerals and Padawan Sub District have asked the village chiefs in Mambong constituency to identify all the potential sites such as caves, rivers, mountains, waterfalls and rapids which could be developed into tourist destinations.
To implement those ideas, Richard said experts needed to be engaged to assist in its feasibility study and implementation.
“Of course, the Ministry of Tourism, Arts and Culture should be involved in providing the funds,” he said.
Richard also spoke on the infrastructure development already implemented by the government in the area (Mambong constituency), saying that all village roads are tarred and the people there are already enjoying 24-hours electricity.
