KUCHING: The Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) programme needs to be the primary choice for the youth in Sarawak in line with the needs of today’s job market.

Jepak assemblyman Iskandar Turkee said this is also in line with the Sarawak government’s desire to produce quality human capital who are knowledgeable, skilled, creative and innovative as well as highly competitive.

In Bintulu and Jepak, he said, this would also augur well with the long-term goal of supporting economic growth in the area.

“A large proportion of the population in Jepak is involved in the oil and gas related industry, and there is a growing need for skills in this field as well as the construction field.

“As one of the centres of the oil and gas industry in the country, Bintulu offers many job opportunities in the field of construction related to infrastructure and industrial facilities.

“Therefore, the TVET training programme aims to improve youth’s level of education and technical skills, preparing them to enter the competitive job market or become successful entrepreneurs,” he said.

In this respect nine youths from Jepak recently participated in the Youth Skills Competency Training Programme, jointly sponsored by the Ministry of Education, Innovation and Talent Development and the Malaysian Construction Industry Development Board (CIDB).

“Through this programme, the youth of Jepak will be trained to meet the increased workforce needs in this sector, ensuring they are able to participate and contribute effectively to the local economy,” he explained.
