KUCHING: Daycare centres which want to hire new employees are strongly encouraged to make use of the Child Sex Offenders Registry.

Effective April 1, the public can visit any state welfare department office and check if someone has a prior record for child sexual offences.

“They can check with the Royal Malaysian Police (PDRM) for a person’s record before hiring him or her,” Welfare, Community Well-being, Women, Family and Children Development Minister Datuk Seri Fatimah Abdullah told reporters when asked about the new registry at Wisma Wanita.

She said this was one of the methods to make sure the right person was hired.

“But it does not mean that it is foolproof as we have seen cases in which the person has no record of child sex crimes but when employed, then problems crop up,” she said.

“We are also carrying out programmes to educate our children and caregivers to avoid children from becoming victims.”
