KUCHING: SK Song Kheng Hai is being renovated to make it more comfortable for the teachers, students and supporting staff.

Bandar Kuching MP Dr Kelvin Yii Lee Wuen visited the school to monitor the progress of the work which was funded by his office.

“We helped to change the whole wiring of one of the blocks for the safety of the students and teachers as it was old and could be a fire hazard.

“We also installed louvres or blockers at the main hall of the school to block the sun rays and even prevent rainwater from coming in.

“Before this, students’ activities including the school assemblies are limited as the sun rays make very hot for students. When it rains, the students also cannot use that area for any activities,” he said yesterday.

Dr Yii stated that his office was also helping the school to upgrade its science lab with new lab furniture and equipment.

Besides that, his office will also be renovating an old unused toilet into a music room for the benefit of the students.

Dr Yii and his team also visited a constituent who is suffering from advanced cancer to find ways to better help him and his family.

“He is currently going through another bouts of chemotherapy. He was diagnosed with colon cancer many years ago, went through all the chemotherapy and radiotherapy sessions, but his cancer relapsed and spread to other parts of his body.

“Now that it has spread to parts like his bone, he is constantly in pain and requires strong painkillers all the time. Because of this, he can barely talk or even wake up from his bed,” he said.

Dr Yii stated that the wife had to stop working to care of her husband full time and they had a son who recently found work with minimum wage.

He said the family wa also taking care of an elderly mother with other chronic diseases.
