SAMARAHAN: Stand-up comedy is no laughing matter. Just ask Achmed Rusli who goes by his stage name Mad Sabah.
He is finding it particularly tough to make headway in this business.
“When it comes to stand-up comedy in the Malay language, I feel that in Kuala Lumpur, I’m the only one fighting for Malay stand-up comedy,” he said.
“And this tour is the first Malay stand-up comedy in Malaysia,” he said after the “Ndak Logik” comedy show held at La Promenade auditorium on Friday (July 30).
.
He said a lot of comedians who present their jokes in the Malay language focus more on television.
“So on television, it’s not entirely a stand-up, it is more of a comedy sketch.
“That being said, one of the reasons why I made this tour was to reintroduce stand-up comedy, and what saddens me most was the controversy happened when I was on tour so I was also affected,” he added.
He was referring to the controversy surrounding a Malay Muslim woman who allegedly insulted Islam during her show at the Crackhouse Comedy Club in Taman Tun Dr Ismail (TTDI) in Kuala Lumpur earlier this month.
But overall, Mad Sabah was happy with the reception he got during his tour, saying his audience was insanely supportive.
“Because some of the stories I told, they could instantly can relate to. I feel they can feel what I feel, so I believe that was the reason why they were entertained by my jokes. Thankful for that,” he said.
He said in terms of reception Sarawakians and Johoreans have been the best.
He is now in talks with his team on organising his next tour which will be held sometime in January next year and Sarawak will be part of his tour location.
“Kuching will definitely be one of the places I’ll be coming to on my next tour,” he said.
The opening act during this tour was performed by Asyraf Kamal.
