BINTULU: Malaysia LNG Sdn Bhd will partner with the Sarawak Natural Resources and Environment Board (NREB) and the Bintulu Development Authority (BDA) in the implementation of the Sungai Plan Restoration Programme beginning this year until 2027.
Petronas’ Malaysia Assets Upstream Business senior vice president Hasliza Othman said the company hopes that this initiative will help conserve and restore the area’s ecosystem while promoting environmental awareness among the local community
“Sungai Plan in Tanjung Kidurong, Bintulu, was selected for its strategic position near industrial, residential and commercial areas. This ensures that the programme benefits the local community comprehensively.”
She said this at the launch of the programme by Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg, who also witnessed the signing of a memorandum of understanding among the three parties involved.
According to Hasliza, the Sungai Plan Restoration Programme will cover three main components with the first part involving establishing baseline water quality standards for Sungai Plan and conducting regular monitoring.
The second component focuses on riverbank greening, aiming to plant 500 trees around the Sungai Plan area to improve ecosystem balance and facilitate ecological restoration while the third component entails implementing a river conservation programme to enhance environmental awareness and appreciation among the local community.
“We aim to contribute to ecosystem conservation and restoration in this area as this aligns with our corporate social responsibility goal of ‘Nurturing the Future’ through environmental conservation efforts,” she said.
Hasliza said the company is also committed to its education-focused corporate social responsibility initiatives and this includes the establishment of MRSM Bintulu, launched by Abang Johari last year, which will welcome its first group of students this year.
Starting this year, MLNG, in collaboration with the Sarawak Foundation, will sponsor around 80 students from Sarawak who are pursuing education in fully residential schools (SBP) in Peninsular Malaysia and Sarawak under the Sarawak Foundation Student Exchange Programme.
The programme which runs until 2029, will enable 40 of these students sent to the Peninsula to be funded by Petronas, while the Sarawak Foundation will fund the rest. – BERNAMA
