MIRI: As pickleball gains immense traction throughout the nation, the Malaysia Pickleball Association (MPA) is rallying sports operators, clubs, private entities, and governmental bodies nationwide to establish additional specialised venues to accommodate the sport’s burgeoning community and unique infrastructure requirements.
Pickleball, a sport that ingeniously combines elements of tennis, badminton, and ping-pong, has witnessed a meteoric rise in interest and participation in Malaysia, said MPA president Farrell Choo.
“This upsurge is evidenced by the establishment of vibrant pickleball communities and the ad hoc adaptation of existing sports facilities for pickleball use. However, more specialised venues are essential to nurture and sustain the growth of this engaging sport truly.”
Despite the commendable efforts by private clubs and sports operators to retrofit badminton, volleyball, futsal, and tennis courts for pickleball play, these adapted spaces often fall short of the sport’s specific requirements.
A standard pickleball court measures 60 feet by 30 feet, with a recommended side barrier of around 4 feet high to prevent balls from encroaching onto adjacent courts, underscoring the need for purpose-built facilities.
Recognising the contributions of organisations such as the MYY Mall Miri, Gymkhana Club Miri, Piasau Boat Club Miri, RB Homestays & Farm Kuching, Ecowarrior Pickleball KL, ESM KL, and Pickle Social Club, the MPA expresses profound gratitude for their pioneering efforts in establishing dedicated pickleball venues.
These trailblazers have set a commendable precedent, showcasing the feasibility and benefits of investing in pickleball infrastructure.
The MPA invites more sport operators, clubs, private companies, and government bodies to join this movement by establishing more pickleball facilities.
By doing so, stakeholders can play a pivotal role in promoting physical health, community engagement, and the sport’s accessibility to a wider demographic.
Investing in pickleball venues offers many benefits, including fostering a sense of community, encouraging active lifestyles, and potentially stimulating local economies through sports tourism and events.
Moreover, by responding to this growing demand, Malaysia can be a prominent player in the global pickleball community, attracting international events and enthusiasts to our shores.
The MPA is committed to working collaboratively with interested parties to facilitate the development of pickleball venues.
“We offer guidance, support, and expertise to ensure that these facilities meet the sport’s standards and serve as a beacon for community health and engagement.
“We invite sports operators, clubs, private entities, and government bodies to consider pickleball’s positive impact and invest in the sport’s future in Malaysia.
“Together, we can ensure that the enthusiasm for pickleball is met with adequate facilities, fostering a healthy, engaged, and vibrant community,” stressed Choo.
