KUCHING: Malaysia is slowly but surely regaining respect and confidence, says a political observer.
Datuk Peter Minos said Chief Justice Tun Tengku Maimun Tuan Mat and the Federal Court have not only brought back respect to the judiciary by making a firm and decisive judgement in the SRC International Sdn Bhd corruption case also “brought back confidence to the political and economic life of Malaysia”.
“The Chief Justice gave Malaysians a very powerful message that Malaysia is operating by the rule of law, that nobody is above the law and that the Constitution is supreme.
“This is repetitive but most of us Malaysians felt bad, ashamed and down ever since the 1MDB scandal broke out in 2018.
“I think many foreigners and other nations knew something was very wrong and awful in Malaysia and were thus looking down on our nation,” he said.
He said from now on, Malaysia can pick up the pieces and rise up politically and economically and it is a matter of time that Malaysia will start running again.
Minos also noted that if and when the 15th general election is called and new national leaders are elected, the country will definitely be on the move on all fronts.
“Malaysia’s name, reputation and dignity will be restored and regained in the eyes of the world.”
On the country’s economic health, Minos predicted that things will be very tough next year, with nations and regions like the US, EU and Japan facing high inflation or even recession.
Apart from that, things in China and India too will not be rosy, he said, adding that if not for its oil and gas, Malaysia will be hard hit, economically.
Coming back to Malaysia, he said when survival is at stake, national unity and national resilience are very much needed, devoid of bad scandals.
Minos, who is also Kota Samarahan Municipal Council (MPKS) chairman, added that Malaysia will bounce back “what comes down will come up”.
“We owe it greatly to our judicial system, especially to the Chief Justice, for ‘saving’ Malaysia, as many had aptly put it,” he said.
