KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia as a global leader in the halal industry has set a gold standard of practices towards upholding halal integrity and values through science and innovation.

Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department (Religious Affairs) Datuk Dr Mohd Na’im Mokhtar said, for that, Malaysia aims to collectively expand the halal market’s reach and ensure that the benefits of a robust halal ecosystem extend beyond the country’s borders.

“Malaysia’s commitment to the halal industry is not just about economic growth, it is rooted in our values and principles.

“The Prime Minister’s Department, through the dedicated efforts of the Department of Islamic Development Malaysia (Jakim) has remained steadfast in our commitment to upholding the integrity and authenticity of the halal ecosystem,” he said at the International Halal Science Conference (IHASC) 2023 here, today.

The text of his speech was read out by Jakim’s Deputy Director General of Policy Datuk Dr Sirajuddin Suhaimee.

Mohd  Na’im said the theme of the IHASC 2023, ‘Halal Industry Sustainability Through Science’ also aligns with Malaysia’s goals, as the country recognised the role of science and innovation in sustaining a resilient and thriving halal industry.

“We are aspiring for new and creative ideas with regard to halal and science to emerge from this conference.

“Halal industry should not be limited to the traditional concept of halal alone, but must also be creative and innovative in its deliverables, in line with the progress of science and technology, for Islam does not oppose to science, so long as the halal principle remains intact,” he said.

The two-day conference also sees the participation of 57 presenters from various countries including Malaysia, Brunei, Indonesia, Singapore, Saudi Arabia, Switzerland and Thailand. – BERNAMA
